FOR SOLENA

Along with a blessing comes a woe; and both are owed to one word ... grandfather. When personalities like Katherine Hepburn or Bob Hope pass on -- people I watched occupy the television for five decades -- I can't help but notice that I am part of the next generation in line, and I begin to wonder how old my granddaughter will be when I go.

My hope is that I'll live a long and healthy life with lots of family gatherings and campfires, and that Solena will want to visit often and adore me as I regard her now. There are weeds to pull, trails to clear, wood to stack, birds to spy, songs to sing, and music to play. And when she calls to Grandpa, it may remind me that I am moving closer to my next destination; but it will mainly remind me how favored my life has been and how glad and holy is the blessing.
